Powerful winter winds brought walls down onto fragile tents sheltering people uprooted by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 individuals. These deaths underscores the dangerous living conditions that continue after over two years of devastating bombardment and critical shortages of aid.

Truce Offers No Relief from Severe Elements

While a ceasefire has been active from October, humanitarian organizations state that residents do not have the sufficient housing required to survive recurring cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the bodies, reported on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

Separately, the local health authority announced on the same day that a one-year-old boy died of extreme cold overnight.

"The world has enabled us to witness loss of life in all its forms," stated a family member after the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per the medical center, 3 people of a single household — elderly a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his son's wife — were killed when an eight-metre high wall fell on top of their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than five others were injured in the event.

Family members on that day began clearing the rubble that had entombed their loved ones and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were distributing tents, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene items across Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of Palestinians live in makeshift shelters since their homes were turned into ruins over the course of the war. Aid groups contend an insufficient amount of building supplies are entering Gaza under the truce.

Fatality Figures After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the administration, says more than 440 people have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their remains brought to hospitals after the truce began. The ministry maintains comprehensive casualty data that are seen as largely accurate by international bodies and outside analysts.

James Elder, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on that day that at least one hundred minors under the age of 18 – sixty males and forty girls – had been killed after the ceasefire started due to military operations, such as drone strikes, airstrikes, tank shelling and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, reflected incidents where enough information had been gathered to justify documentation, but the overall count is believed to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of children had been injured.

"Although 'explosions and gunfire have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," the spokesperson told reporters at a press conference in Geneva by video from Gaza City. "So what the world now calls calm would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of over two million individuals has been struggling to keep the freezing temperatures and bad weather at bay while facing shortages of assistance and a lack of more substantial transitional shelter, which is urgently required during the colder season. This marks the third winter after the conflict between the state and the group started on 7 October 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and killed around twelve hundred individuals and abducted two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

The local health authority reports over seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been killed in the subsequent military campaign.
