Why Real Madrid Have 'Utter Trust' in Teenager Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a pivotal European tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz opted to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
