Virginia's New Governor Creates History as Virginia's Initial Woman State Leader

Throughout two and a half centuries, Virginia has seen 74 governors, all of them male. Recently, Abigail Spanberger overcame this historic barrier by being elected as the initial woman to hold the office in Virginia's annals.

A Campaign Focused On Economic Concerns and Targeted Opposition

Ex- US representative and CIA operative won with a campaign that highlighted cost-of-living issues and deliberately targeted the former president's agenda instead of the person.

Background and Education

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on August 7, 1979, she relocated to a Virginia community at her early teens. Her dad was an military serviceman who subsequently worked in law enforcement; her mom was a nurse and community helper.

She enrolled in the University of Virginia, receiving a degree in literary arts. After graduating, she worked briefly as a substitute teacher before turning to a career in public service.

“I was raised believing that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,” Spanberger shared with followers at a gathering in the city of Norfolk recently.

Government Roles

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she investigated involving narcotics, exploiters and money launderers. She served legal orders, frequently being the only woman on the operation squad. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and concentrated on anti-terror efforts, serving undercover and abroad.

Personal Crossroads

In that year, she and her spouse, an engineer, faced a decision. Living on the west coast, they were contemplating another overseas assignment. They took out a world map and asked their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “everyone we love reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we decided to transition from a federal career, to state involvement because she was correct. Those dear to us lives in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in Virginia, she volunteered with an advocacy organization, which combats firearm incidents, and founded a youth group. In that period, she resolved to seek office, which others told her was a “crazy endeavour” because no Democrat had won the congressional seat in decades.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was implementing with his executive power and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I saw my member of Congress over and over again oppose the Affordable Care Act. And I knew I had to do something. So for the record: I was victorious.”

Moderate Stance

In Washington, she rapidly became part of the moderate Democrats, a collection of centrist and fiscally moderate lawmakers. She concentrated on lower-profile issues: bringing internet access to the countryside, fighting drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She built a standing for collaborating with opposing parties and was consistently rated as the most bipartisan member of the Virginia delegation. She was vocal about messaging that she felt alienated independents, warning her fellow Democrats against ideological slogans that could be used against them in contested districts.

Political Alliance

Along with Congresswomen a former CIA analyst and Mikie Sherrill, she was called a member of the “pragmatic group” in opposition to the left-leaning “group” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Gubernatorial Campaign

In November 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a another term and would instead campaign for Virginia's leadership in 2025.

Her platform highlighted themes of public service, support for education and infrastructure and defense of democratic institutions. Her CIA background lent her credibility on defense issues and she spoke of public service as a vocation instead of a career.

Win Over Opponent

This enabled her to overcome rival candidate her challenger's criticisms on social topics, notably the assertion that she is an radical on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Spanberger, who consistently argued that local school districts should decide whether transgender students can participate in competitive sports, cast her opponent as the contender more misaligned with the mainstream of the Virginia electorate.
