US Military Conducts Lethal Attack in Pacific, Resulting in Four Deaths
As stated by a high-ranking military spokesperson, the American military carried out a fatal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a craft operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no US military forces were injured.”
Context and Prior Actions
The statement comes a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny
The government has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the limits of legal military action.
Although the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide seemed to suggest a wider political aim. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
