The people of Israel mark second remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace talks continue
People have assembled across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel responded by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A senior representative involved in the negotiations indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The official said the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are making efforts to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Points in Discussions
- An enduring truce
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- Future governance of the region

"My family are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, especially my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."
