The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"Iâm so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
âWe're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,â said Cappa. âThe attitude is that we have to know weâre the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.â
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
