The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
