The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Season on the British Broadcaster

Line of Duty cast members
Vicky McClure are set to reprise their characters in the acclaimed crime series

The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
