Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
