The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
