Weather experts are saying a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Go Ahead In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This comes despite advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the weather service.

Celebrations Under Open but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are expected to be cold, so additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on public transport.

The Mercury Expected to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Alerts Released

In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
