Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
