The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.
Our team is verifying images and video circulated earlier today that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location of where the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
