Jailhouse Surprise: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison

He contested justice and justice won.

A couple of months subsequent to getting a quarter-century plus sentence for trying to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro now looks headed to prison.

Imminent Jailing

The adjudicated plotter – who has been under residential detention in his residence while a set of judicial steps and challenges unfold – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the coming days, amidst mounting talk that he will be transferred to a notorious high-security prison.

Past Remarks on Prisoners

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the far-right ex- paratrooper exhibited scant compassion for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we give these scoundrels a good life?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be fucked, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to finish in prison, the only thing required is not rape, kidnap or theft.”

Incarceration Location Discussion

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, four of whom this week inspected the facility in an seeming bid to discourage the judiciary from banishing him there.

Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, claimed he predicted the 70-year-old politician to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his destination could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal ailments – the result of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 presidential election race – signified it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He won’t be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” he added, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the standard of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells containing forty prisoners: “That’s practically one meter squared per detainee.

“We spoke to the inmates and they complain, naturally, of the terrible cuisine,” added the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

He is not the only voice speaking out prior to the former president’s predicted imprisonment.

Penning in a prominent publication, another ally, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the greatest political injustice in its history”.

“This is an injustice that erodes the hearts of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Public Opinion

It is possibly true given the substantial backing Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. But his anticipated incarceration has also warmed the spirits of many other people who feel he ought to be jailed for plotting to prevent his successor from assuming office – and even scheming to have him assassinated.

Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the current administration's allied group, said: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. No one desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to get proper treatment – but respectful handling while incarcerated. He can’t continue being his own prison warden for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have long celebrating the harsh treatment of convicts, had suddenly woken up to their entitlements. “Just now has the extreme right – which has consistently argued that human rights should not be for lawbreakers – decided to inspect a penitentiary to find out what situations are truly like,” he stated.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, demeaning treatment”.

Likely Incarceration Facilities

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently contains about 14,000 inmates, his probable destination seems to be a close penitentiary for police officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

His potential cell are much more comfortable than those in the main prison, although still a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro had while living in the impressive leader's home, approximately 20 kilometers away.

According to reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – approximately the dimensions of two parking spaces – and features a 12 square meter restroom with a shower and a 12 square meter balcony. “He could be permitted to have a television and additionally a minibar in his room as long as they were provided by his family,” the report indicated.

Partisan Reactions

Senator Lucas condemned the speculated plan to send the former leader to Papuda as “a form of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his outcome in the {
