International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Search for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official confirmed that its personnel joined Hamas officials into zones of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by Israeli military control to support the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Terms and Captive Remains Return

Under the US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on 10 October, Hamas is required to return the remains of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. In exchange, Israel has consented to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

The organization has to date returned the bodies of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the last five days, as a portion of those remains are believed to be in areas beyond the ceasefire boundary marking the temporary truce line.

Red Cross Involvement as Impartial Facilitator

“Upon the appeal of the parties, the Red Cross joined a participant in the hostilities as the party searched for the bodies of the deceased individuals beyond the military-established ‘yellow line’,” stated a spokesperson for the committee.

The spokesperson added: “Those involved to the conflict determined the modalities of the mission and entrusted the ICRC to act as a impartial mediator. We was not involved in those negotiations.”

She additionally clarified: “Our team was did not participate in the physical hunt for the bodies nor does it take part in the physical recovery of remains.”

Global Humanitarian Law and Responsibilities

According to global legal norms, it is the duty of the sides involved in a conflict to locate, collect, and retrieve the bodies of the deceased.

American Demand and Local Search Efforts

Recently, the American leader issued a two-day ultimatum to the militant group. “They is going to have to begin handing over the remains of the deceased hostages, which include two Americans, promptly, or the other countries participating in this significant truce will intervene,” he wrote on his online channel.

When the two-day window neared, Hamas, joined by the Red Cross, joined teams from Egypt, who were authorised by Israel to search for bodies beyond the line indicating the Israeli military’s pullback inside Gaza. An Israeli spokesperson said the delegation would use heavy machinery and trucks in the operation.

Official Confirmation and Media Reports

The news was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that Hamas representatives had been allowed to enter sections of Gaza under military authority to search for the bodies of captives, alongside Egyptian and Red Cross teams.

“For this purpose, representatives were allowed to pass the yellow line,” the source was quoted as saying.

Video released by a media outlet seemed to show individuals of a specialized group – belonging to the organization’s armed faction tasked with guarding captives – escorting a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location near Rafah, which is beyond IDF jurisdiction.

Challenges in Finding Hostage Bodies

Efforts to locate for the remains of Israeli hostages has become one of the most sensitive issues in the truce reached between the parties. Yet, the attempt to locate the remains has been difficult from the outset, given the existence of an approximate 60m tonnes of debris across the territory, where, as per health officials, at least 10,000 Palestinians are recorded as missing, trapped under the debris.

Diverging Claims on Remains Whereabouts

Hamas has claimed it does not know the precise locations of all the remains, saying it has been unable to communicate with a number of its units that had been holding the hostages and were allegedly killed during Israeli bombardments.

However, an Israeli government spokesperson asserted that Hamas knew the whereabouts of the remains. “Should the group made more of an effort, they would be able to recover the bodies of our hostages,” the official said.

US Stance and Weapons Surrender Discussions

Although the US president has acknowledged that a portion of the remains are hard to reach, he said that “others they can hand over now and, for unknown reasons, they are failing to do so.”

“It may have to do with the disarming of Hamas,” he added.

Washington has said it has obtained assurances from the organization that the faction will surrender its arms, though no specific schedule has been established. They remains reluctant to give up its arms without solid guarantees about the fate of its members.
