Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the censorship procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release
However, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But some do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a law mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of materials that included little new information.
