A Tale of Unexpected Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Ground
During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to arrange a place to stay when I arrived, yet upon reaching the city, a large conference was taking place and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, not like the one back home, does not operate all night. Unsure of what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I caught public transport and found myself drifting towards a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend those hours in a place that was open all night. This was not ideal at my peak for acing a crucial interview the next day, however, being a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
The world needs more people who show such kindness.
I must have looked lost because a woman noticed me walking aimlessly through downtown and inquired if everything was alright. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the local university – a perfect solution, given that my my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered some food: one filled rolls she had from her work shift. I had access to warm shower facilities and a secure location and safe to sleep.
With hindsight, I can appreciate what a big chance she accepted being a woman inviting a male stranger she had only just encountered stay in her room. In those days I was in a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I am astonished she offered that help – but still very grateful.
Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I never saw her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. It is my wish karma has rewarded her generosity tenfold. The world needs more folks like that woman.
